Ito predicts Fit will lead a surge in Honda sales

New Mexican plant is vital to strategy

TOKYO -- Honda Motor Co. President Takanobu Ito expects the subcompact Fit hatchback to be Honda's fastest-growing nameplate in North America over the next four years.

Ito expects North American sales of the Fit hatchback and new variants to soar to 200,000 units in the next four years, from 64,177 in 2011.

That means, according to Ito's vision, that the Fit -- more so than Honda's current high-volume Accord, Civic, Odyssey or CR-V -- would power North American sales 18 percent higher to Ito's target of 2 million vehicles in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2017. In 2012, Honda expects North American sales of 1.7 million.

Ito says the Fit's U.S. sales will rise after a redesign scheduled for next year. The following year, Fit production begins at a new plant in Mexico, which will give dealers more Fits to sell unburdened by the unfavorable dollar-yen exchange rate. The arrival of additional body-style variants also will help.

"We've set the target of selling 2 million vehicles in 2016," Ito told Automotive News last week. "What is for sure is that of that, the Mexican-produced 200,000 units, which entail the Fit and its variants, will be the minimum contribution that that series makes."

Under Ito's plan, the Fit family would account for about 10 percent of Honda's North American sales.
In 2011, Honda's Fit sales in the United States rose 9 percent to 59,235. Yet the Fit accounted for just 5 percent of the company's U.S. sales. Adding Canadian and Mexican sales, the Fit made up 4 percent of Honda's North America volume.

Those results are well shy of the 200,000 Ito envisions. Getting to 200,000 implies an additional 135,000 sales of Fit and Fit-derived vehicles -- or 45 percent of the sales growth forecast through 2016.

The next Fit will be more fuel efficient and better packaged, Ito said. And it will be priced more competitively because of the new Mexican production.

"We will be able to provide even more advanced package and further fuel economy enhancement without the exchange-rate disadvantage," Ito said. "It is going to sell very well."

The Mexican assembly plant opens in 2014 with capacity to build 200,000 Fits and Fit-based variants. The factory aims to supplant all Fit imports from Japan. Ito said the "vast majority" of its 200,000 output would go to the United States.

The redesigned Fit will be the first car featuring the next generation of Honda's one-motor hybrid system, which it calls integrated motor assist. That drivetrain gets new everything: battery, electric motor, engine and transmission, Ito said.
Honda hasn't decided whether to sell the Fit Hybrid in North America.

Some analysts believe Honda's ambitious target is within reach.

"I don't think it's outlandish," said Chris Richter, an auto analyst with CLSA Asia Pacific in Tokyo. "There is appetite for the Fit. But I think Honda has been deliberately suppressing exports of the Fit because at the current yen-dollar exchange rate, you can't make money exporting from Japan."

In June, Honda CFO Fumihiko Ike told Automotive News that the company loses money on exports from Japan at current exchange rates of around 80 yen to the dollar. He also said Honda was carefully allocating supply of the Japan-made Fit to the United States to help insulate Honda from the foreign exchange hit.

"Dealers can't get a decent supply of Fits now, but that will change once you get local supply," Richter said.

Honda aims to squeeze incremental volume from Fit variants. Honda has said it plans a crossover based on the Fit, but Ito declined to confirm whether it would come to U.S. showrooms.

Last month American Honda Motor Co. CEO Tetsuo Iwamura said the Mexico plant will build "multiple" derivatives of the Fit. Elsewhere in the world, Honda already sells a Fit wagon, minivan and sedan.

"With the Mexican production we won't be producing just Fit itself, but we are going to start production of its variations at the same time," Ito said. He declined to specify the next body style, but said: "We are thinking of a variation Americans will really love."

Droopy avait posté ceci:

Honda's new diesel engine unveiled (India not North America)

Considering the demand for diesel cars in India Honda's new 1.6 litre diesel engine is bound to come to our shores. Read on to know more

In 2003 Honda had developed a 2.2 litre i-CTDi four cylinder diesel engine for the Accord in Europe and America. The engine found its way under the hood of many other Honda models sold across various nations in the western world. Then in 2008 Honda introduced the i-DTEC version of the 2.2 litre diesel engine to meet Euro 5 emissions norms.

Now, Honda has revealed a downsized turbocharged version of the old 2.2 unit as a 1.6 litre common rail i-DTEC engine at the Tokyo Motor Show. Honda has used lots of aluminium in the engine and the new engine is bound to be very light. The four pot motor develops 120PS of power at 4000 rpm and 299Nm of torque at 2000 rpm. The engine is said to be fairly rev happy for a diesel like Mazda’s SKYACTIV 2.2 litre diesel engine and is also said to have good low end grunt.

Honda engineers say that they are working on a more powerful 160PS version of the 1.6 litre i-DTEC engine with 349Nm of torque that will replace the current 2.2 litre diesel unit in Europe.

As for India, the new 1.6 litre i-DTEC is bound to find its way under the hood of the Honda City which will help the mid-size Honda ramp up considerably in the sales department due to the demand for diesel cars in India. Also, a downsized version of the 1.6 litre i-DTEC engine should be on the cards for the Honda Jazz and Brio, which will help Honda gain a considerable chunk of the diesel hatchback market share in India.

Honda had confirmed their plans for a diesel power plant for India earlier this year when the Honda R&D Co (Automobile R&D Centre) Managing Officer, Chief Officer (Development Operations) Yasuhisa said, "We are aware of the petrol price increase in India but we consider that as a sign of growth in the Indian market... definitely we are currently developing diesel engine cars.” That comment has been cemented by the unveiling of the new 1.6 litre i-DTEC diesel engine.

Merci i-VTEC  ;)

Promises reduced fuel consumption and a sporty driving experience (worldcarfan.com)

Honda's hybrids aren't known for being overly sporty, but the company is hoping to change that by introducing their new Sport Hybrid systems.
First up, the Sport Hybrid Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive system is described as a "lightweight and compact one-motor hybrid system" for small-sized vehicles. It consists of a newly developed 1.5-liter four-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine, a seven-speed dual clutch transmission (with an integrated high-output electric motor) and a lithium-ion battery.
Honda says the system will enable "highly efficient" electric vehicle operation at low- to medium-speeds as well as a sporty driving experience during acceleration and high-speed cruising. The company also says the system will deliver improved fuel efficiency by increasing energy regeneration using the clutches to disengage the engine during deceleration.
Next up, the Sport Hybrid Intelligent Multi Mode Drive system will be used in the 2013 Accord Plug-in Hybrid. It combines a newly-developed engine, an electric continuously variable transmission (with two built-in motors and a lock-up clutch) and a lithium-ion battery. It optimizes fuel efficiency by switching between three different driving modes (EV, petrol engine or both) depending on the situation.
Lastly, the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system has a 3.5-liter V6 engine, three-electric motors and a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. It promises to deliver V8 performance as well unparalleled maneuverability and the security of all-wheel drive.
